YOUTH ENRICHMENT  PROGRAM

Liberian Community Youth Enrichment Program

The Youth Enrichment Program targets youth ages 12 to 18 years old in the Liberian Community. Based on school records, police reports and interviews with parents in the Liberian Community, the need to engage youth in the community is apparent. The records show that youth are dropping out of high school at a higher rate than ever, are getting involved in drugs, skipping school and the need for the police to intervene with them is on the rise.

Liberian Youth Enrichment Program Goals

  • Our goal is to help engage youth in the community in a positive manner;

  • Educate them about Local, State and Federal Laws;

  • Create an environment to learn about various career choices and pathways;

  • Encourage them to complete high school and continue on to college or specialized trainings;

  • Introduce them to individuals in various organizations, companies, and corporations that they could work with in the future;

  • Keep them informed about their communities and motivate them to lead healthy lives and encourage them to excel.

How Does the Liberian Youth Enrichment Program Work?

  • On the last Friday of each month will be the Youth Enrichment Program at the Liberian Community Center. Youth are invited for an evening of fun, information sharing and other activities.

  • The program starts at 6 pm and goes to 11:30 pm.

  • The first 2 hours of the from (6-8 pm) will focus on guest speakers working in different careers who will talk about their jobs, how they got to where they are, and the paths they took to get to where they are. After a presentation, youth will have the opportunity to ask questions and share their own experiences based on the topic being discussed.

  • At each event, the youth will create a wish list of careers they would like to explore and speak to the adults one-to-one.

  • The Program Coordinator will then spend the rest of the month engaging speakers from colleges, work places, and various backgrounds for the event.

  • Youth will also have light refreshments and at the end of the discussions, they will have the opportunity to interact with each other in a safe environment.

Program Needs

Based on the first event that took place in December 2018, we estimate that we will have between 50 to 150 youth per week as the program grows.

Volunteers: The youth program must have 5-10 volunteers each week to help, in order to take place.

Transportation: The families of youth will often be working during the evening hours, so transportation is needed to help get youth to and from the event.

Sponsors: The program will require sponsors and or funding to cover the cost of hosting the event.
